Дуже непросте, але яскраве та насичене виявилося життя фізіолога Ліни Штерн (1878-1968), першої в СРСР жінки-академіка. Народившись в Латвії, вона з дитинства проявляла великі здібності до наук, а в тридцять п'ять років закінчила Женевський університет (Швейцарія), де і була залишена при кафедрі фізіології для подальшої наукової роботи. У 1925 році Штерн переїхала на постійне проживання в Радянський Союз, де майже двадцять три роки була професором Другого Московського медичного інституту, а в 1949 році разом з іншими діячами Єврейського антифашистського комітету була заарештована і провела три роки у в'язниці - без суду і без слідства. Потім послідувало посилання в Середню Азію... Здавалося б, такі випробування могли зломити кого завгодно, проте, повернувшись з Джамбули, Штерн як ні в чому не бувало продовжила наукову роботу, очоливши відділ фізіології Інституту біофізики АН СРСР.
Цій сміливій, принциповій, сильній жінці наука зобов'язана низкою відкриттів, в числі яких - метод отримання гормонально-активних препаратів. Її праці з вивчення основ фізіологічних процесів були визнані в усьому світі. Однак однією з найважливіших справ свого життя Ліна Штерн вважала допомогу євреям, що постраждали під час другої світової війни - тобто саме те, за що перенесла і посилання, і в'язницю.
