Цілком можливо, Бенедикт Нурсійський (480 - 547 р. н.е.) - святий, проголошений покровителем Європи і «батьком» всього західного чернецтва - вважав, що народився не в тому місці і не в той час. І вже абсолютно точно, він вважав, що народився не в тому тілі, оскільки тіло чоловіка і взагалі - людське тіло - влаштовувало його з великим трудом. Що й казати, адже люди грішні, на відміну від Ангелів, яким невідомі спокуси і печаль. І людина, зрозумівши цю істину, повинна прагнути до безплотного ідеалу. Нехай Ангелом йому не стати, але можна зробити так, щоб і людське стало йому чуже.
Природно, досягти духовної і тілесної чистоти можна лише в монашому житті, - вважав Бенедикта Нурсійський, - але навіть ченцям необхідно мати свій Статут. До цієї думки він прийшов після того, як перша ж організована ним чернеча громада розвалилася через суперечки та побутові розбіжності. Зате вдруге він не повторив помилки: організувавши монастир, Бенедикт написав для нього Статут, який згодом став знаменитим. У цьому документі, що складався з 73 глав, ним власноручно були прописані всі можливі нюанси життя справжнього монаха - починаючи від його вступу в монастир, яке прирівнювалося до нового народження, і аж до розпорядку дня, зовнішності і деталей гардеробу.
Статут цей м'якістю не відрізнявся. На думку Бенедикта, чернець повинен був відмовитися від свого колишнього імені, своєї власності і навіть від родинних стосунків на користь монастиря. Що ж стосується зовнішності, то вона повинна бути максимально наближена до ангельської, чому, як вважав Бенедикт, неабияк заважають волосся і борода. Більше того, один раз вибравши монастир, монах зобов'язаний був залишитися в ньому назавжди, не спілкуючись із зовнішнім світом ... Як не дивно, суворі правила бенедиктинців не тільки не відлякували охочих здобути ангельське життя, але і навпаки, проникли в багато монастирів Європи, на століття вперед визначивши лад життя всього західного чернецтва.
