І дійсно, згідно зі свідоцтвом знаменитого візантійського історика і письменника Прокопія Кесарійського (який був радником Велизарія і міг спостерігати за життям його родини в безпосередній близькості), слово Антоніни в державі значило немало. Ставши подругою дружини імператора Юстиніана Феодори, вона охоче допомагала імператриці у всіх її злочинних задумах. Проте один раз над Антоніною нависла реальна загроза, що йшла від її власного сина: той дізнався, що мати невірна батькові. Залучення до цього секрету мало на стало для юнака фатальним: Антоніна зібралася було вбити свого сина, врятувати якого змогло тільки наглий постриг у ченці.
До старості, уже після смерті Велизарія, Антоніна, втомившись від придворних інтриг і неспокійного способу життя, вирішила, що їй пора подбати і про власну душу. Однак так як про це вона мала досить туманне уявлення, то єдине, що прийшло їй в голову, - це придбати за гроші чоловіка монастир, таким чином купивши собі тепле містечко на тому світі.
